[CRPF CoBRA]

The CRPF CoBRA is an institution, specifically a specialized unit of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), which is a Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). CoBRA is an acronym for Commando Battalion for Resolute Action.

The unit was officially formed on September 12, 2008, with the MHA approving the raising of ten battalions to meet the challenges posed by the Naxalite rebels. Its creation was a direct response to the growing intensity of the Maoist insurgency, which had gained momentum in states like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha, and the need for a force specifically trained to operate in the rugged terrain of the Red Corridor. The problem it solved was the lack of a dedicated, highly-trained force within the CRPF proficient in guerrilla tactics and jungle warfare to counter the insurgents' asymmetrical warfare.

CoBRA works by selecting personnel from the CRPF who then undergo rigorous commando and jungle warfare training at institutions in Belgaum and Koraput. Its key mechanism involves conducting reconnaissance, long-range patrols, gathering intelligence, and carrying out ambushes and precision strikes against insurgent groups. The unit is primarily deployed in states affected by Left Wing Extremism (LWE), but also undertakes counter-insurgency operations in the northeastern states.

CoBRA connects to the broader concept of India's internal security apparatus, functioning as the specialized anti-LWE wing of the CRPF, similar to how the Rapid Action Force (RAF) is the specialized wing for dealing with riots. The unit was raised on the lines of the Greyhounds commando force of undivided Andhra Pradesh, which was also established to counter Naxalites.

The unit has seen recent changes, including the raising of an all-women CoBRA battalion in 2021. Furthermore, due to a shortage of eligible officers, the CRPF has recently enhanced the maximum age limit for induction into CoBRA for officers at the Deputy Commandant level from 43 to 45 years. In a significant expansion of its mandate, the CRPF is also set to raise an 11th CoBRA battalion for counter-terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
