BrahMos Aerospace

BrahMos Aerospace is an Indo-Russian multinational aerospace and defense corporation and a joint venture (JV) institution headquartered in New Delhi. It was founded to design, develop, produce, and market the BRAHMOS supersonic cruise missile system. The name is a portmanteau of India's Brahmaputra and Russia's Moskva rivers, symbolizing the bilateral partnership.

The JV was formally established on February 12, 1998, following an Inter-Governmental Agreement between the two nations, driven by India's post-1990s need for a cruise missile system. It was formed between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya (NPOM), building on the Russian P-800 Oniks missile design. The company operates with India holding a 50.5% equity stake and Russia holding 49.5%.

The core mechanism is the BRAHMOS missile, a two-stage system that uses a solid propellant booster to reach supersonic speed, followed by a liquid ramjet engine to maintain a speed of up to Mach 2.8. It operates on the 'Fire and Forget' principle and is unique for its universal design, allowing launch from land, sea, air, and sub-sea platforms, which has enabled India to complete the "supersonic cruise missile triad".

A significant change occurred after India's accession to the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) in 2016, which removed the previous export range limit of 290 km. This allowed for the development of extended-range variants, such as the BrahMos-ER, with a range exceeding 400 km and up to 800 km. BrahMos Aerospace is also a key component of India's 'Aatmanirbharta in Defence' initiative and has recently secured its first major export contracts, including a deal with the Republic of the Philippines in January 2022 and a confirmed deal with Vietnam in May 2026. The corporation is also developing the BrahMos-II, a next-generation hypersonic cruise missile.
