Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited

The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) and a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the administrative control of the Ministry of Railways, Government of India. It was incorporated on October 30, 2006, under the Companies Act, 1956, to address the severe congestion on the Indian Railways' existing trunk routes, particularly the Golden Quadrilateral, which carried a disproportionate share of freight and passenger traffic. The problem it solved was the saturation of the mixed-traffic railway network, where line capacity utilization reached up to 150%, leading to a loss of freight market share to road transport.

DFCCIL's core mechanism involves the planning, financial resource mobilization, construction, maintenance, and operation of Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs). These DFCs are high-capacity, high-speed railway lines exclusively for freight transport, running parallel to the existing Indian Railways network. The primary projects are the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC), running from Ludhiana to Dankuni, and the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), connecting Dadri to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). The DFCs aim to create additional capacity, improve logistics efficiency, and enable Indian Railways to regain its market share in freight transport.

DFCCIL is closely connected to the Ministry of Railways and receives a Track Access Charge (TAC) from the Ministry for the use of the corridors, which is currently based on a cost reimbursement model. The project is also linked to the development of industrial corridors and multimodal logistics parks along its alignment. Recently, the project has seen significant commissioning, with the Eastern Corridor completed and the Western Corridor being 96.4% operational as of late 2025, with the remaining 102 km between Vaitrana and JNPT scheduled for commissioning by December 2025. The overall cost was revised to ₹1,021.59 billion.
