The term Mundra Solar PV refers to the large-scale, vertically integrated solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing facility located in the Mundra Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Kutchh district, Gujarat. It is an industrial undertaking, specifically a manufacturing unit, established by Mundra Solar PV Limited (MSPVL), a company incorporated on June 1, 2015. The project was created to address the significant demand-supply gap for solar PV components in India and reduce the country's dependence on imports, particularly from China, to achieve the national target of 100 GW of solar power capacity by 2022.
The facility operates as India's first and largest vertically integrated solar PV manufacturer, meaning it handles the entire production chain from raw material to finished product. This mechanism involves the production of metallurgical grade silicon, polysilicon, ingots, wafers, cells, and modules. The manufacturing unit, which spans an 800-acre production campus, has a capacity of 4 GW for cells and modules, along with 2 GW for ingots and wafers. A key part of its operation is its location within the Electronic Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) in the Mundra SEZ, which provides advantages like multimodal connectivity via road, rail, air, and sea.
The project is closely connected to the Adani Group, with various subsidiaries like Adani Enterprises Limited and Adani Green Energy Limited holding stakes in the operating entities, such as Mundra Solar Energy Limited (MSEL). It also connects to the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), which awarded a manufacturing-linked tender that led to the establishment of the facility. Recently, in August 2023, MSEL received the commercial operational date (COD) certificate from SECI for a 2.0 GW per annum solar PV cells and modules manufacturing plant, signifying a major operational milestone. The company has a strategic roadmap to establish a 10 GW fully integrated ecosystem.
