National Action Plan on Climate Change

The National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) is a comprehensive national strategy and programme of the Government of India, launched to address the challenges of climate change. It was released on June 30, 2008, under the guidance of the Prime Minister's Council on Climate Change (PMCCC). The NAPCC was created to provide a national roadmap for tackling climate change through mitigation and adaptation measures while simultaneously ensuring the ecological sustainability of India's development path.

The core mechanism of the NAPCC is the implementation of eight National Missions. These missions focus on areas like energy efficiency, water conservation, and sustainable agriculture. The eight missions include the National Solar Mission, the National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency, the National Water Mission, and the National Mission for a Green India. The plan operates on seven core principles, including protecting vulnerable populations and pursuing national growth through ecological sustainability.

The NAPCC is closely connected to India's international climate commitments, such as its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. It also mandates the creation of State Action Plans on Climate Change (SAPCCs), which tailor the national goals to region-specific challenges. The plan has evolved, with the National Electric Mobility Mission being added as a ninth mission. Furthermore, the target for the National Solar Mission was significantly revised in 2015 from 20,000 Megawatts to 100,000 Megawatts by 2022. The overall scheme has been extended up to 2025-26.
