National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal

The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) is an online platform and initiative of the Government of India, operationalized by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on August 30, 2019. It was established to provide a centralized mechanism for citizens to report all types of cyber crime incidents directly to law enforcement agencies, addressing the rising incidence of digital offenses nationwide. The portal, accessible at cybercrime.gov.in, is operated through the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). The mechanism involves citizens filing complaints for offenses like hacking, identity theft, and financial fraud. These complaints are then forwarded to the relevant State or Union Territory police for investigation and potential conversion into First Information Reports (FIRs). A key feature is the special focus on cybercrimes against women and children, allowing for anonymous reporting of content related to Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). The NCRP is integrated with the toll-free National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930, launched in 2020, which supports immediate reporting of financial cyber frauds. The legal framework for handling these cases connects to the Information Technology Act, 2000 (IT Act), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, and the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The portal has seen recent enhancements, including the introduction of the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System in 2021. Furthermore, in May 2024, the I4C piloted an e-Zero FIR system in Delhi to expedite the conversion of complaints exceeding ₹10 lakh into FIRs.
