Pixxel Space is an Indian private space technology company, founded in February 2019 by Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal while they were students at BITS Pilani. It is a concept and an institution (a private company) focused on Earth observation. The company's mission is to build a "health monitor for the planet".
The company was created to solve the problem of a lack of high-resolution, detailed satellite imagery for applications like predicting chlorophyll content in plants. It addresses a gap in spectral resolution by providing data that is up to 50 times more data than conventional satellites.
Pixxel works by building and operating a constellation of hyperspectral imaging satellites in a sun-synchronous orbit. Hyperspectral imaging is the key mechanism, capturing and analyzing images across a wide range of the electromagnetic spectrum, including wavelengths invisible to the naked eye. The satellites capture hundreds of narrow wavelengths of light, which is the "spectral fingerprint" of materials, allowing for the detection of minute changes like early crop disease or methane leaks. The company's current operational constellation, named Firefly, provides imagery with a 5-meter resolution across 135 bands in the Visible and Near-Infrared (VNIR) range. The data is processed and delivered to customers through its in-house Earth observation platform, Aurora.
Pixxel connects to the broader Indian space ecosystem, being one of the first private startups to launch its own commercial satellites, which has helped reshape the industry previously dominated by the government agency. It has secured agreements with organizations like ISRO and NASA. The company launched its first two technology demonstration satellites, Shakuntala/TD-2 in April 2022 and Anand/TD-1 in November 2022, using both SpaceX and ISRO's PSLV-C54 rockets.
The technology has changed recently with the transition from the demonstration satellites, which had a 10-meter spatial resolution and 150 spectral bands, to the commercial Firefly constellation with a 5-meter resolution and 135 bands. The company is also developing the next-generation Honeybee constellation, planned for launch in 2027, which will expand coverage to include both VNIR and Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) bands across 260 bands.
