United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federal absolute monarchy, a political institution formed by a union of seven emirates along the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah, with Ras Al Khaimah joining later. The federation was formally established on December 2, 1971, following the British government's decision to withdraw from its protectorate over the former Trucial States. The problem it solved was the need for a unified, independent state structure after the British withdrawal, particularly following the discovery of oil and natural gas reserves, which began to be exported from Abu Dhabi in 1962.

The mechanism of the UAE involves the rulers of the seven emirates, or Emirs, working together to form a governing body, from which a president is elected, traditionally the ruler of the largest and wealthiest emirate, Abu Dhabi. The country's immense wealth, largely from oil, has fueled rapid development and diversification into commerce, finance, and tourism, with Dubai serving as a major international hub. The UAE connects to several key international and regional institutions, being a founding member of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and a member of the United Nations, the Arab League, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The UAE has undergone significant recent changes, notably in its social and economic framework. In January 2022, the country became the first Gulf nation to shift the work week for federal government entities from Sunday-Thursday to Monday-Friday, aligning with Western business hours. Furthermore, the UAE announced its withdrawal from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its wider OPEC+ group, effective May 1, 2026, a decision reflecting its long-term strategic and economic vision to increase its own production flexibility. While social reforms like the relaxation of alcohol licensing have occurred, the government has simultaneously strengthened its labor framework, increasing Emiratization quotas for companies with fifty or more employees to 10 percent of their skilled workforce by the end of 2026.
