United Nations

The United Nations (UN) is a global intergovernmental organization and institution. It was established to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among states, and promote international cooperation. The UN was created in the aftermath of World War II to prevent another global conflict, succeeding the defunct League of Nations. The organization officially came into existence on October 24, 1945, following the ratification of the UN Charter, which was signed on June 26, 1945.

The UN's mechanism is defined by the UN Charter, which establishes six principal organs. These include the General Assembly, where all 193 member states have an equal vote, and the Security Council, which holds the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. The Security Council has 15 members, including five permanent members, and its decisions are binding on member states under Article 25 of the Charter. Other principal organs are the Economic and Social Council, the International Court of Justice, and the Secretariat. The Trusteeship Council suspended its operations on November 1, 1994, after its mandate was fulfilled.

The UN connects to the broader UN System, which includes specialized agencies like the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The UN's work is guided by the three pillars of Peace and Security, Human Rights, and Development.

Recently, the UN has been undergoing a significant reform effort known as the UN80 Initiative, which aims for a systemic restructuring to improve efficiency and responsiveness. This initiative includes proposed budget cuts, staff reductions, and the potential consolidation of agencies. While the core structure of the principal organs remains, the dysfunction of the Security Council's permanent member veto power is addressed by new mechanisms, such as General Assembly Resolution 76/262, which mandates a debate when a veto is cast.
