Zojila tunnel

The Zojila Tunnel is a massive, under-construction infrastructure project—a 13.15-kilometer long, two-lane, bi-directional road tunnel located at an altitude of approximately 11,578 feet (3,528 meters) in the Himalayas. It is set to become Asia's longest bi-directional single-tube high-altitude road tunnel. The tunnel is being built under the treacherous Zoji La Pass on National Highway 1 (NH-1), connecting Baltal in Jammu and Kashmir with Minimarg in Ladakh.

The project was conceived to solve the problem of seasonal isolation for the Ladakh region, as the Zoji La Pass remains closed for up to six months each year due to heavy snowfall, avalanches, and landslides. The tunnel's construction, which began in October 2020 after the foundation stone was laid in May 2018, is being executed by Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) for the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). The construction utilizes the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), which is suited for the fragile and unpredictable Himalayan geology.

Once operational, the tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh, reducing the travel time across the pass from over three hours to about 15 to 20 minutes. The tunnel is of immense geostrategic significance for India, as it will ensure the year-round, uninterrupted movement of troops, military equipment, and essential supplies to forward areas in Ladakh, which shares sensitive borders with both China and Pakistan. The Zojila Tunnel is part of a larger 33-kilometer connectivity corridor that includes approach roads, bridges, and the already completed Z-Morh Tunnel, which together will ensure year-round access on the Srinagar-Leh highway. The excavation phase of the main tunnel achieved a major milestone, known as a "breakthrough," in June 2026.
